Ashanti.

The recent official report that Kumassi, the capital of Ashanti, where Sir Frederick Hodgson, Governor of the Gold Coast ' Colony, has been besieged by the natives for some weeks past, had been relieved is now contradicted. The latest advices from West Africa show that the relief column, under Lieut.-Colonel Wil^cocks, which numbers 250 men, is at Fesu, on the way to the beleaguered town. \ Several severe engagements have taken place between the British garrison and the Ashanti rebels.

A considerable force of loyal natives is fighting on the British side.
