Nothing like being in advance of the times. Mr Robert Chapman late Town Clerk has issued "his balance sheet of the Borough Council for the year ending 31st March 1989. Will any of us witness that date? Mr Edward Coley announces that he has started in business as a general carter and wood and coal provider. Being an energetic business man Mr Coley is sure to secure a good trade. All old residents on this coast will regret to hear of the death of Mr Freeman R. Jackson, the popular Wanganui auctioneer, which occurred at Wanganui yesterday morning. Poor fellow— Mr J. B. Potter, of New York, husband of Mrs Cora Brown Potter, the celebrated actress, las obtained a divorce from his wife >n the ground of desertion on her part. The Manawatu Times says Mr W. S. Hart has shown us a gun stock which he recently manufactured to the order of a sportsman in Hawera. The stock is an excellent sample of Mr Hart's skill in this department of his trade, being beautifully finished and neatly fitted, and the fact of the gun, which is of expensive make, having been sent from so far up the coast for Mr Hart to repair, is proof of the reliance placed in his workmanship by his customers. An Australian up-country clergyman, in the course of a patriotic speech, told the following ancedote, which is worth re pc? ting, says " Woomera " in the Australasian, both on account of its liberty of sentiment and language : — "A storekeeper and a customer were discussing the present war. Said the customer, 1 1 hope every member of the j Australian contingents will leave his bones in South Africa. I hope every British soldier will be destroyed.' 1 You put yourself in a most unenviable | position by such remarks,' said the storekeeper. 'If you hate the British flag why do you live under it and enjoy the freedom of a British colony ? ' ' What can Ido ? ' asked the customer 1 You can do this,' said the storekeeper. ' You can go and live in Russia, under tyrannical government, which hates the British flag. If Russia does not suit you, you can try Germany, where you will be gratified in your hatred of the flag. If you can't get enough in Germany, try France, where the national hatred of the British flag ought to satisfy you ; but if you can't get enough hatred to satisfy you even in France, go down to hell, for you will find no British flag there !
