■ __ «. ; ; The ordinary iponthly meeting was held last night at the offices at 7.30 o'clock. , Present— His Worship the Mayor (Cr W. B. Rhodes), and Crs C.Austin, Wk Purcell, H. Baker, B. Spelman, H. Aldridge and F. E. Jenks. The minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed. The inward and outward correspondence was read. Proposed by Cr Purcell, seconded by Cr Jenks, That, a .committee, consisting of His Worship the Mayor, Crs Austin, Baker, Jenks and the mover take such steps as they think necessary for a public inspection 6f cows in this district. Carried, c, Proposed by Cr Jenks, seconded by Cr Purcell, That the annual balancesheet now laying on the table be printed, and the clerk get it done at a cost not exceeding that of last year. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Jenks, That the following alterations Vqe made in valuation and rate rol|«r-rJa|xe E; Cowles, as owner of s&tibn 67 Ito 69 in place of Whyte's Trusteed. Alexander Speirs, for section? 76 to 78$ in place of same ; Annie E. Barber, for part section 109 m place of same; ;.Kate V. Whyte, for part section* iio in place of same; Mary Ann Whyte, -ior part section no in plnce of sai^e ; Mary Ann Whyte, for sections 118 and ng in place of same ; Claca Jessie Barber, for sections 523 and : 524* in place of same ; Annie Maria Wood, for section 224 in place of same ; Arthur C. Stansell, for part block VIII, hotel and landvin place of same ; James Taylor Whyte, for part Blbck VIII, in place of Mrs Esther J. Stansell. by Cr Purcell, seconded by Cr Austin, That the accounts as read be passed for payment. Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Austin, That the r clerk be instructed to" write to the Minister of Railways asking for an addition to the local railway station in the form of a room for parcels and goods, etc., as the preset t waiting-room is frequently full of parcels and goods preventing the public from using it. As winter is fast approaching the need is very great. The increase of traffic demands better accommodation. Carried. Proposed by Cr Jenks, seconded by Cr Purceil, That this Council approve of the fidelity bond submitted by the town clerk, and that Mr Robert Chapman's bond be returned to him. CarProposed by Cr Purcell, seconded by Cr Austin, That this Council as a whole take such steps as they think necessary for celebrating the conclusion of the war in South Africa in aco/»rdance with telegram from the Hon. 1 Acting-Premier. Carried. '
Proposed by Cr Aldridge, seconded by Cr Purcell, That the approaches to culvert on No. i Line between Easton's and Satherlcy's be fenced on either side and white-washed, as in its prei sent state it is not safe. I Proposed by Cr Spelman, seconded by Cr Baker, That the Town Clerk be j instructed to order 200 tons more of Palmerston metal. Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Austin, That tue clerk be instructed to write to the Manawatu and Horowhenua County Councils informing them of the almost completion of the Wirokino Bridge, and asking them to advise suggestions for making a united celebration of the formal opening. A copy of Mr Fulton's letter to be enclosed to each Council. Carried. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr. Purcell, That iij order to obtain a | more efficient supervision of roads and drains, the senior roadman, C. Spring, be made overseer and directly responsible to the Mayor for the time being, and that he furnish to the Council at. their monthly meeting, through the town clerk, a report on work done during the month, and that he attend the monthly meeting in person to afford to the Council any information they may require, and that his pay be increased by sixpence per day. Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Austin* That the ranger be instructed that the Council do not require, his services after/ ensuing month, and receive a month's notice from date, and that tenders be invited for ranging at so much per head, the lowest or any tender not necessarily accepted. I Mr J. Barham tendered for the re- 1 moval of nightsoil in the borongh at 8d weekly per house, providing the Council would guarantee 150 houses. — -The tender was held over for further consideration. ] Proposed by Cr Purcell. seconded by Cr Jenks, That the opinion of the Borough solicitor be got as to whether ! the Council is in a position to enforce the use of pans in a fixed area of the Borough without passing a special bylaw to that effect. Carried. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Baker, That the reports as read be 1 adopted. Carried.
