Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, MAY 19, 1900. Mafeking Relieved.

The satisfactory news that has been sent across the cables that the plucky little town of Mafeking has at last been relieved has aroused an universal shout of joy. All honour is due to Colonel Baden-Powell and his forces, as well as to every inhibitant of Mafeking for the gallant and lengthy resistance they have made against the attacks of the Boers. For the past seven months and a half has the town been besieged and the daily routine has been fighting, and for a very long time starvation. In February the bread of Mafeking was made out of meal, unsifted oats, and bran. Horseflesh was i&eir meat, and to succour the natives who were enclosed within the town a daily "pot pourri "or soup was concocted from the scraps rescued from the starving dogs Heavy rains flooded the trenches and bomb-proof shelters, and typhoid, diptheria, fever, and rheumatism assisted the enemy. The delay that his taken place in sending assistance is possibly good, but the many hopes, from time to time raised, must have made the besieged heart- sick. Their endurance, their self-sacrifice, and their loyalty to the Empire makes the whole world rejoice that help has been given them, and we trust that comforts will be in time to rescue the sick and the women and children There will be a hearty three cheers for the gallant band at Mafeking in the four divisions of the globe on the receipt of the news of the relief of the besieged garrison.
