The Tropea.
DETAINED BY THE AUTHOR] TIES.
parly on "Friday afternoon the officials of the Qustoms Department] moved in the .matter of detaining the ! steamer Tropea, which was to have j left for South Africa with remounts at I 4 p.m., and being supported in their action by Captain G. Smith, Superintendent", of Mercantile Marine, the vessel was not allowed to proceed to ; sea. This action was consequent upon' fhe^ vessel haying a dangerous list to starboard, which, if any heavy weather was encountered daring the. first two or thteedays would seriously injure the well-being of the horses (of Which there are 186). The cause ot the lfct, Captain Croskery explains, is that the starboard bunkers contain 50 tons more coal than do those on the port side. He says this is the first time the list has taken exception to, as it disappears altogether when, two or three days at sea, owing to the coal consumption. He interviewed the Hon. J. G, Ward on the matter yesterday afternoon, with the result that the extra 50 tons in the starboard bunkers will have to be discharged. This will be done, and it is hoped the Tropea wiU sail finally for Albany at about 2 p.m.— N.Z. Times.
