On Sunday morning the Commercial hotel and the adjoining building, at 'Palmerston, was wholly destroyed by fire. Every one got 9afely out of the hotel. Mr M. Walker has in his shop a specimen of a white Belgian carrot weighing ig^lbs. It was grown by Mr George Hughes. v The Dresden piano company have, for the greater convenence for showtheir pianos, removed to the corner store lately occupied by Mr Henderson. The Rangitikei Advocate says :— The turnip crop in the district will not be a good one this season, owing to the want of sufficient rain just after the sowing. Probably the prices of wethers will be affected,' that of stores slightly depreciated, and fats appreciated. Breakers ahead. The Otaki Mail says, until Mr Chapman commences his duties as Inspector for the Horowhenua County, Mr. Dean, of Levin, has been authorised to act as sanitary inspector. The Government ha 9 sent £5000 as a public gift from the colony to the Ottawa Fire Relief Fund. It is now three weeks, says the N.Z. Times, since the Premier made a declaration concerning the insanitary state of certain parts of Wellington, andPasserted that nothing was being done by the City Council to remove the aggregation of filth\from various places in the city. At the time the Mayor took occasion to explain how it would be impossible for filth and rubbish to accumulate under the system that had been adopted, and almost challenged the accuracy of the Premier's assertions. Mr Seddon, telegraphing from Auckland, pointed out where heaps of rubbish were to be found, while he reiterated that many nuisances existed that the City Council officials had not taken cognisance of. ' Since then the Corporation has appointed an army of inspectors, and a door to door inspection has been made, with the result that a condition of affairs has been disclosed which, if previously asserted on the " ipse dixit " of any individual, would have been scouted as a wild exaggeration. The Premier's statements have been more than justified.
At the meeting held last night of the parishioners of All Saints' Church at the Sunday school, which was largely attended, it was agreed that the welcome Social should be a purely parochial one and that it be held in the Sunday school building on Monday next. Tickets (free) for admission may be obtained at Messrs Fraser's and Rhodes by members of of the Church only.
