Foxton Borough Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting was held last night at 7.30 o'clock. His Worship the Mayor Said that before starting the business, he would like to give them some good news.- and that w&s to be ready to ring the bells and put their flags up, as at 5 o'clock he had received word that the relief of Maf eking was imminent.
The remarks of the Mayor were , received with applause. ! Presort— His Worship the Mayor I (Cr W. B. Rhodes), and Crs F. E. i Jenks, C. T. Austin, W. Purcell, H. Aldridge, H. Baker and B. Spelman. A special meeting was held when the following resolution was confirmed : — Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Jenks, That the special order passed at a special meeting of this Council on the 19th March last and duly advertised in the Manawatu ; Herald as follows :— That this Coun- j cil by special order take all needful ' steps to sell the piece of waste land on ! - No. 1 Line to Mr A. S. Easton be now confirmed. The ordinary business was then proceeded with. Minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed. I The inward and outward correspondence was read. Proposed by Cr Purcell, seconded by Cr Aldridge, That a list of those willing to subscribe to the Indian Famine Fund be opened at the Town' Clerk's office, ana that the same be
notified to the public through the columns of the Manawatu Herald. Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Austin, That the Inspector of Stock be supplied with a complete list of owners of all dairy cows within the Borough, requesting the completion of inspection made by Mr Wilkie at earliest convenience. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Austin, That the application of K. V. Whyte to erect a verandah in Main street on Temple Chambers be ap^ proved subject to usual regulations, Carried. Proposed by Cr Purcell, seconded by Cr Jenks, That the accounts as read be passed for payment. Carried. Cr Spelman presented a petition to the Council from residents in Jenks' street asking that the road be put in good repair before the coming winter, and also that a lamp b,e placed at one end of the street. The clerk was Instructed to see that the repairs are carried out.' Proposed by Cr Purcell, seconded by-Cr Spelman, That the pomp lately used at the artesian well be put in order, and affixed to the new well in Victoria Park, Carried. a^ Proposed by Cr Spelmaq, seconded by Cr Aldridge, That another tank be procured for the Avenue, windmill to be connected with the one now there by a pipe from the top of each, ao as to enable householders to always .have first use of the water; the tap for drays to be removed to the new tank ; also that tanks and windmill-stand be painted with two coats of hemitite. Not carried.
As an amendment to the above, Cr Jenks proposed, and Cr Purcell seconded, That the resolution proposed by Cr Spelman and Aldridge re windmill be given effect to as soon as the Council are in funds. Carried.
Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Baker, That this Council in anticipation of its current revenue to borrow of its bankers, the Bank of New Zealand from time to time as required by way of overdraft any sum not exceeding the amount of its legal borrowing / limit. Carried.
Proposed by Cr Baker* seconded by Cr Austin, That the .foUowJn^ ajt&ations be made in the rolls :— Remove name of P. Guerin and in#€(rj t&a£?pf „ Mary Jane McCarthy for sedtioQ |S&j A. Jonson, and insert that of/RifT, i Betty, part lot XI, Block VIII ; A. J; Wbyte, and insert that of BfeaWh Mirian Baker for section 15a ; M. J. McCarthy, and insert that- of Charges v A. Spring for section 136. Carried. Proposed by Cr Jenks, seconded by Cr Austin, That the Foxton Borough Council by virtue of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1886, and amend* ments, the Rating Act, 1894, and amendments, and the Libraries Act do hereby notify its intention on Monday, * June 4th, 1900, to strike a general rate of fifteen pence in the £, and a Library rate of one penny in the £, on the rateable values of the whole of the rateable properties within the Borough for the period commencing April xst, 1900, and terminating on the 31st day of March, Igo 1, to be due and payable in one sum at Council office, Foxton, on the 25th June, 1900. The ratebook is open for inspection at the said office. Carried.
Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Baker, That a culvert under Coley street be extended the full width, of the street,, as at present it is dangerous ttf the public. Carried. Proposed by Cr Jenks, seconded by Cr Purcell, That the values as shown in the supplementary valuation list passed by the Assessment Court oa Saturday last be substituted for the old values, where the old values are fijiven in said supplementary list, and the new entries foe houses built be idded to said valuation list. Canned.
Proposed by Cr Spelman, seconded - by Cr Aldridge, That the Railway auhorities be requested to make venient entrance to the railway station at the North end, as it would be a srreat convenience to the public. Car-, ripd.' " ■
A tender was received from Mr R. Gray for planting at the Sanatorium. Vfr Gray attended the meeting, and after hearing him, Cr Austin proposed, and Cr Jenks seconded, That the tender of Mr R. Gray for planting the Poxton Sanatorium be accepted according to specifications, and that a committee consisting ot His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Aldridge and Austin be/ appointed to make an estimate of toe area to be planted and sown in accordance with the amount to be spent. Carried. ~ The applications for the positions of Town Clerk, Librarian, Inspector of Nuisances and Slaughterhouses were then opened :— T. R. Bowden, W. G. Beech and W. T. Wiggs applied for all the positions; Alf Fraser, a« TownClerk; W. Alzdorf, Inspector of Nuisances ; E. Ball, E. Watson, Victor Jorgensen, James Costley, and C. Moore as Librarian.
Proposed by Cr Parcel], seconded by Cr Austin, That the following appointments be made :— Alfred Frasef as Town Clerk ; Walter Alzdorf as Idspector of Nuisances and Slaughterhouses; E. Ball as Librarian. Carried.
The < ouncil went into Committee on sanitary affairs. Proposed by Cr Tenks, second*) by Cr Baker, That applications be tailed for thtf position of nightman for a stated area of the Borough, to be in by next meeting. Carried. Proposed by Or PurceU, seconded by Cr Austin, That the report of the Inspector of Nuisances and Police report* be adopted, and that the Inspector be requested to take action against those '"' who fail to put their premises in a clean and healthy condition within one week. Slaughterhouses to also be put in order. Carried.
Proposed by Cr PurceU, seconded by Cr Baker, That in view of the representations made to this council by the Government re the Bubonic plague the Government be requested to stop the issue of bank notes a second time, it being within the knowledge of this T /! council that filthy notes are issued, and no doubt are the cause of spread of disease, and that a copy of this resolution be sent tc head office of Bank of New Zealand. Carried. The Council then adjourned.
