Householders' Meeting.

♦ The annual meeting of householders to elect a 5-chool Committee . for the year was held at the Hchoolhouse on Monday night, the attendance being small. . . ■ The Rev. W. Woollass, chairman of the School Committee, taking the chair? The following report on the past year was read. REPORT OF COMMITTEE. Report of the Foxton School Committee for the year ending March 81st, 1900. At the first regular meeting of .the Committee the Rev. W. WooDass was elected chairman and clerk, and Mr T. Westwood treasurer. The committee has met ai regular intervals and attended assiduously to the necessities of the school. Each member taking a deep interest in the school and its work. Thft average attendance, fell off considerably during the last quarter of 1899 on account of an epidemic of measles amongst the children In consequence of this the staff Was I reduced, and now the school is heavily handicapped by having to — work a much increased attendance with less teachers. The Board has "*" been repeatedly appealed to for help, but persistently refuse to give any. The average attendance has been as follows -.—June quarter, 1899, 191 ; September quarter, 1899, 187 ; December quarter, 1899, 178 ; March quarter, 1900, 202. Number on roll March 81st, 1900, 267. The present teaching staff is as follows :— Mr W. S. Stewart, 8.A., Head Master; Miss O'Brien, Firaj,

Assistant ; Miss McKenna, Ist Class P.T. ; Mr Furrie, P.T. ; Miss Wallace. The annual concert held last December was a huge success, and the Headmaster and staff were heartily thanked by the Committee for the able and energetic manner in which it was got up. The funds of the school benefited to the extent of £11 17s 6d, net proceeds of concert. gp* During the year a new system of monthly examination report an(l merit cards has been adopted, and although it entails an extra amount of work upon the staff, your committee are highly gratified by the results sb far, and no doubt as time goes on it will prove even more satisfactory, as it tends to bring pupil, parents and teachers closer together, and shows what progress the pupil is making during the year. Fart of the school ground has been planted with Marram grass during the year to prevent the sand drifting, and so far with satisfactory results. The accounts for the year have been audited by R. Chapman, Esq , Town Clerk, and are presented herewith. ACCOUNTS. The abstract of the school fund account shows that the Committee had a credit balance at the beginning of the year of £16 15s 3d, and left office with a credit balance of £15 19s Id. During the year the amounts, with balance, received were £59 9s 8d and paid away. The chief extra items of receipt were £1 16s 6d for prize fund, £11 17s 6d from concert, and £8 14s for fines. The nominations for committee men were then received, when the following eight were nominated and on a ballot being taken received the number of votes placed after their names, the seven highest forming the new committee : — A. Morton 20, F. Cook 18, A. Speirs 15, A. Fraser 15, J. Walsh 15> C. Spring 15, W. Woollass 15, W. B. Rhodes 14. COMMITTEE MEETIKG. The .Committee then met, and the Rev. W. Woollass was elected chair- , man and clerk and Mr A. Fraser i treasurer. Meetings to be held on the first Tuesday in each month at 7.80 p.m. Small accounts were f passed for payment. Messrs Woollass and Cook were appointed visiting committee for the next month, and the chairman was empowered to grant exemptions.
