THE BUBONIC PLAGUE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATO HERAU). Sir,— The fact that rats infected with the bubonic plague are in New Zealand stares us in the face. In all directions steps are taken to prevent, as much as possible, the outbreak df this horrible disease. It is a very difficult think to speak in a small town about its shortcomings, and only the dar.ger ahead must be my excuse. Foxton is a dirty place and no mistake—look at the back premises of most houses, look at the slaughter houses where for the last 20 years the offal has accumulated. The whole *• ground is saturated with microbes of one kind and another-. Pigs feed on the refuse, the place swarming with rodents, your meat killed, dressed, and exposed there before sending it to the shop. There are many more unsavoury spots, but enough. I hope these remarks will be taken in good part, and our Town Councillors will at once apply to the Government for a Commission to inspect, as it is hardly fair tc ask a local man to do so.— l am, &c, Argus.
