The " Textile Mercury " of 10th March reports : — New Zealand hemp, steady ; good fair Wellington JanuaryMarch shipments sold at £31 10s. At auction a few bales of New Zealand sold at £36 10s, bnt the bulk was withdrawn at £37. At the same time Manila was selling at auction at irregular prices ranging from £36 for common to £70 for. prime quality. For arrival by February steamers fair current sold at £49, by January- March steamers £47 ios, good current February steamers £51, fair current March-May steamers £40. The " Cordage Trade Journal " of 15th March says ;— While the receipts have increased at the Philippine ports now open, making the total receipts since January ist, 1900, 172,000 bales, against 108,000 bales for .1899, holders ot hemp claim that the necessities of ordinary consumption can well take care of all that is likely to be forthcoming for some time to come, and are moderately firm in their views as to prices in the near future. Manufac- j turers are not disposed to operate heavily, but some are buying for their immediate requirements who have run comparatively low in stocks on hand.
