Battlefield Horrors.

Private F. Cane, in the Mounted Infantry Detachment of the Buffs with Lord Methhen's force, in thescourse of a letter describing the Mddder River battle, says : "I was close behind the captain of my company, and together we rushed forward to take una good position He had just got behind a small bush, and 1 Vas still in the open, when five shots struck him almost at the same time —two in the mouth, one m the centre of the chest, one in his stomach, and one in the left shoulder He turned round and walked a few yards, then the blood rushed from his mouth in perfect torrents He said: "My God! my God! Im shot! * Lay down, nieij, lay down, and then he shouted out for the dootor, whose aid would have been useless, as he was mortally wounded Lance-corporal Woolley took the captain's helmet off, and laid him down. Then he turned round to me and said: "The captain's dead, Freddy.' Ten minutes later as Woolley waa crawling along on his hands and knees an explosive bullet struck him in the temple, burnt and blew half his head off, and left him in a kneeling position with his head on the ground in a poo' of blood. I was not more that two yards from either of them, then I crawled round to get a better position, and juat got close to another lance-cor-poral when he got shot, and went down in a heap."
