Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 1900. The Tram to Rangitikei.

From the report of the last meeting of the Manawatu County Council will be seen that the Chairman has justified the confidence placed in him by the Council by vigorously carrying out their wishes as to the exten sion of the Carnarvon -Sanson Tramway from Sandon to the bank of the Rangitikei river. We expected nothing less knowing that Mr J. G. Wilson can, when he likes, do excellent work for the public. It is most satisfactory to learn that the County can obtain the £6000 needed as a loan from the Government, and also that Mr Fulton, whom the Chairman consulted as to the extension has expressed his approval of the route selected. All that now remains to be done is to take the poll of the ratepayers, and it is in this particular that we trust no overconfidence will be shown. There are so many ways in which a vote can be lost that it is never safe to feel sure about it until the numbers are polled in your favour. We would like to see the greatest of care taken and good organisation secured when placing the verdict before the public, and that every step be taken to secure every available ratepayer recording his vote. Ji any assistance could be rendered by residents in the Borough we can assure the chairman it will freely be given, as the extension of the Tramway is to the manifest advantage to every settler on this west coast. Now that so much useful information has been published as to the advantages the line will be to the greater number of settlers in the County and the actual yearly saving this expenditure will secure, it will not be so difficult to obtain the support of the ratepayers as it will be to get them to record their votes on the date to be fixed, thus organisation is needed so that forgetfulness shall not lose a much desired and needed public work.
