Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 1900.

At the last monthly meeting of the Palmerston Hospital Board some discussion took place in reference to several of the old age pensioners in this district. It was stated that the men spent the money in drink immediately it was received, and it was necessary that the pensions should be transferred to other people on their behalf. The opinion was also expressed that it was the duty of the Board to take action in this matter, as the persons referred to would have to be maintained by charitable aid if their bahaviour eventually caused them to lose their pensions. The Board decided to write to the Stipendiary Magistrate with a view to having the pensions transferred. Ministers in Cabinet on Wednesday decided to declare Australia an infected country. The course has been necessitated by the fact that there is no means of detecting the passengers who have travelled overland from intected ports. Vessels coming from all parts of Australia to this colony will therefore in future be subjected to rigid quarantine. As every precaution is being taken by the authorities at Samoa, Fiji and other islands to keep away the plague, and as it has not made its appearance there, the Government has decided to take no restrictive action in respect to those places at present. At the last meeting of the Manawatu County Council, Mr C. Anderson in presenting a request from the North Island Bacon Company, for pig pens at Carnarvon station, said that at ?>resent the settlers were sending away j rom the Rongotea district as many as 60 pigs a week, and were likely to send more in the future. Mr Anderson then proceeded to affirm that the company was well established and the yards would be a permanent necessity. He said the company had paid away from £2000 to £3000 for pigs since October last, and were actually unable at the present time to keep pace with the demand. They had markets in Napier and Auckland, despite the fact that two similar factories had been shut down in the latter city.
