Manawatu County Council.

The usual monthly meeting of the above was held on Wednesday. Present — Crs J. G. Wilson (chairman), Hammond, Strang, McLennan, 0. Masters and Robinson. Leave of absence was granted to Cr Clark. CORBESPONDENCE . From Messrs Walker and Nolan, applying for a dray license. — Granted. Prom Feilding Chamber of Commerce, pointing out the 1 necessity of having Stewart's line and the Feild-ing-Ha combe road completed before the wet-weather set in. From D. Fraser, stating that he had no intention of closing t\ road leading from the Parewanr*. fo*d, but reserved the right to keep the present gates on it. From T. F. Eichardson, notifying that Wang's line would be opened for public traffic, as demanded by the Board. From Government Railways Traffic Manager, stating that the supply of gravel could be maintained at 10 wagon loads per day, delivered at Oroua Bridge. From James Moore, stating that his dray would be fitted with 9 -inch tyres as required by the bye-laws. From W. Duncan, calling attention to the drain under the bridge on the Foxton-Sandon road. — Referred to overseer. From Horseshoe Drainage Board, notifying that the drain opposite Mrs Campion's, property had been completed, and askitig that culvert in same be lowered.— Referred to overseer. Cr Strang suggested that a culvert be lowered on Elkin's road.— The matter was left in the hands of Cr Strang and the overseer. From the Treasury, notifying that the Council's application for a loan of £6000 for the extension of the tram line to the Rangitikei river had been approved. From T. Evans, asking permission to remove a few loads of gravel from Hunter's metal pit. — Granted, subject , to certain conditions. From his Excellency the Governor, stating that it was not considered necessary that another commission should be set up in connection with the erection of the Bulls bridge. A circular was received from the Government containing suggestions and directions respecting bubonic plague and other infectious diseases. The chairman reported that he had shown Mr Fulton, Government engineer, over the course of the proposed tramway extension, and the latter had approved of same, making one or two valuable suggestions. Mr Fulton had also expressed approval of second-class rails being used. The chairman also reported that important improvements had been effected to the southern approach of the temporary Bulls bridge. With regard to the purchase of iJhe monkey and derrick, which the chairman had been deputed to make, the latter reported that he paid £22 for same on condition that they were delivered at Sandon. — Action endorsed. The overseer was instructed to arrange matters in connection with the Mount Stewart gravel pit. Cr Masters reported that the Council's gravel pits were considerably damaged by private individuals removing gravel. The overseer also lodged a similar complaint, and the council decided to have a notice erected in the Mount Stewart pit that no settler should remove gravel without special permission, and a royalty of 6d per load should also be paid. Mr Carl Anderson waited on the Council and stated that he had' been deputed by the North Island Bacon Curing Company to ask if the Council could see its way to erect pig pens at tjie Carnarvon station. He said that, at present, the pigs had to be loaded at night, and, being crowded in the truck, several losses had occurred, particularly of late. Mr.i Anderson also suggested that the pens could be used fpt sheep. The Chairman stated that the tram was at present barely paying expenses, but the Council were keeping it going for* the benefit of the settlers. Still the Council would like to meet the settlers in their request. Mr Anderson said the company wanted a yard 20 or 30 feet square, to hold from 70 or 80 pig 3. Finally the CounciL decided to grant the company's request with regard to the pens, and a resolution was passed to that effect. A petition was received from Herbert H. Hunt, H. Sanson, and 14 other ratepayers, praying the Council to put in culverts along thefoad line from Jones' line to the cemetery, Rongotea.— Owing to the absence of Cr Clark the matter was deferred until next meeting. Complaints were received from Rongotea settlers that pigs were allowed to wander about the township. — Resolved that the ranger be written to with regard to the matter. The balance sheet for the yeav ending March 91st, 1900, was submitted. The receipts in the general account for the year were £2380 10s lOd, and disbursements £2778, leaving, with the amount brought forward from the previous year, a credit balance of £8159 11s 4d. The statement of balances showed that the total credit balances (including

£8159 11s 4d from the general account) amounted to £8902 17s Bd, and the debit balance to £8457 8s 7d, which left a credit of £445 14s Id. The receipts in the Tramway working accoint were £1941 9s Bd, and the working expenses £2051 195. The report submitted by the Tram* way manager showed the receipts for the month to be £62 15s 8d in excess of expenses. Tne Chairman was instructed td^ write to the Rangitikei County Council, and ascertain whether the latter considered it advisable, now the temporary bridge had been erected to continue the working of Scott's Ferry. — M.
