Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 1900.
Two hundred and/fifty remounts ' were shipped. from Sydney by the Medic from Capetown. Altogether over four thousand have been purchased in the cdlqpy. Excitement has been caused in i America by Admiral Dewey expressing his willingness to stand for the Presidency as a Democrat. Over £77,000 has been subscribed in Victoria towards the various war funds. There has been such a demand for Sir Arthur Sullivan's setting of " The Absent-minded Beggar" that a fifth edition has been issued. Two hundred and twenty-five thousand copies of the song have been sold. One of the effects of the war upon amusements is illustrated by the case of one popular London vocalist, who has had 13 engagements cancelled within three weeks, and in the same period received 71 applications for hk free services at entertainments for the various war funds. A new recruit to the army of lady composers is in the charming person of Madame Nordica. She has written a song which was warmly received when she 1 sang it in public, and is now engaged upon a set of waltzes. The American prima donna intends publishing her compositions, which will it/is hoped, be heard in London during the season. An interesting story is going the rounds (says the " Devon and Exeter Gazette") in connection with the mobilisation of one of the companies of Imperial Yeomanry in the West of England. The officer in command was the possessor of only one medal for an engagement, and he was somewhat envious of one of his men who appeared on parade with a number of medals across his breast. His-curiosity getting the best of him, the officer stepped up to the man, and said, " You have a number of medals there, I see. 11 " Yes, sir," was the reply. " For wha« engagements were they ?" was the next question. 'Why, bless 'cc, sir, they ain't for no engagements; they be medals father won in the fat stock shows." The story is a good one. But the Yeomen going to the front are not "soft." Tenders are wanted for clearing 90 acres of rushes on the Motoa estate. Tenders dose on Monday next at 5 p.m. The Borough Council notify that a rubbish depot has been provided at the entrance to the Target reserve. All rubbish must be taken there and buried or prosecution will follow. The dates of visit of Mr Bridge's representative to Foxton and district are advertised elsewhere.
