A Railway Smash.

Yesterday at Mungaroa, two miles on the Wellington side of Eaitoke a train containing 40 trucks of sheep 8 trucks of timber and 4 other trucks of general merchandise got away on a gradient, and a sheep truck jumped off the the line and going round a curve all the trucks left the line and coming into collision were smashed to matchwood. Only the engine, timber trucks and guard's van remained on the rails. Out of 2860 sheep it is calculated that only 500 survived. The assistant guard Stephen Sicks was mixed up in the wreckage and when secured was taken to the Wellington hospita^ when it was found that his leffairm was broken and lacerated in the forearm to such an extent that the muscles were exposed; also that his left leg was fractured above the knee, and his head lacerated in a number of places.
