Costly Mistake of a N.S.W. Sentry.
An unusual notification is made in connection with the zeal of : a sentry of fhe New South Wales Medical Corps at Orange River Camp. It runs: «N o 49, Private Thos. Henry Norns, N^.W. Army Medical Corps, was tried by a district court-martial, held at Orange River, South Africa, Janu«y 19. for insubordination, and sentenced to 84 days' imprisonment, with hardlabor?' From advices received bv post it would appear that the man wm on sentry-go, when two 1 men^apnroached the camp. They were Somptjy challenged, but did not take fhe trouble to reply Ptoperly. The Gentry again challenged, and, on receivingan unsatisfactory repW, fired. Sae man was killed, and the other wounded. The sentry was courtrmartialled and sentenced to 6 months imprisonment, with hard labor, which wak reduced to 84 days, and later, Aether remitted? Hfs duty was, of £3w to call out the guard, and give the men in charge, not shoot them " on right."
