Mr McEwen, of Maketn, near Gisborne, advertises for a first-class stripper keeper to run a Booth, Macdonald's machine. The wages offered are high. Sheep are nf'.eu r Highly handed by shearers on many up-country stations — so it was stated at a meeting of the Wellington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals — and the society had decided to send' its insprctor through the country districts next shearing season. Why should the Society stop at sheep. Horses in the back stations have often very bad backs. The Society will have its work cut out in Wellington with the rats if plaster of paris is used to kill them, as the death is an extremely painful and cruel one and strongly calls for this humane Society's intervention. I Teacher : " Will some member of the class explain how we hear things ?" Bright Sprin : " Somebody tells pa something in the city ; them pa tells ma as a profound secret ; them ma tells it at the Sewing Society meeting, and them we all hear it." The Premier has received the following cablegram from the Right Hon. Cecil Rhodes, dated Capetown, 15th i ns t. : — " Thanks for telegram. We were very pleased to see your men at Kimberley. The siege was getting monotonous after four months. It was also pleasant that, the war should have been the means of our knowing en eh other. I hope some of your men wiH stop here." The second patriotic concert given in the Public Hall on Saturday night was greatly marred owing to the holiday being put off from Saturday to Monday, as many of the performers were unable to get away as they were employed in Levin, and it was not till Friday that they knew of the holiday ', being altered. The concert was got up by the promoters more tn reciperate them for the lossincnrred over the first concert, but the partial failure has made it worse than ever, but they still have hopes of recovery. The Foxton Brass Band had kindly offered to assist, but they could not perform on Saturday night either, owing to most of the bandsmen being in business,
A general impression seems to have been created in Foxton that the hall was lent free of charge to the Patriotic Concert Committee on Saturday night by Mr Fraser. This is totaily erroneous?, as the Committee paid for the hall in advance.
The sum of £1 us 3d was thrown on the stage while Mr E. Reade was singing " The Absent-minded Beggar " at the patriotic concert on Saturday night. This amount has been handed over to Mr Rhodes, Mayor.
Last night at a meeting of the Foxton Brass Band Mr R. T. Betty resigned from the leadership in favour of Mr Kearsley, who has taken up his residence here as a teacher of music. >>lr Betty was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the services he had rendered to the band since its formation.
By this (Saturday) morning's train* Mr E. Reade» for some time a prominent figure in the musical institutions of Feilding, took his departure for Foxton where he has received an appointment. During his residence in the town Mr Reade has held several positions, amongst which may be mentioned the secretaryship of the football club. His services as a vocalist were irr demand around the district and in this capacity he will be missed from the opera " Les Cloches " now under practice. As " Dick Deadeye " Mr Reade achieved fame in the production of the opera " Pinafore/* and in many other matters he made himself a popular figure. His numerous friends will wish him success in his future career. — Staf.
A shipment of five hundred ducks will shortly be made from Wellington. This will be the first of similar shipments made from Mew Zealand ports to London under the direction ot the Agricultural Department.
We are desired to state that though Mr Wunsch has purchased Mr Fraser's bakery business there wttl be no alteration in the baker 1 , Mr Fraser still continuing to act ad such Sot Ut Wunsoh.
