Riot at Scarborough.

A London cable of 18th March says, " A riot arose at Scarborough out of a pro-Boer meeting held by Mr Cronwright Schreiner, husband of the novelist Olive Schreiner. Messrs Joshua, Rowntree, and Schreiner were mobbed. Eventually the military suppressed the disturbance.'' The Cape Times of the 24th January says, Mr Frank A. Nenner. a journalist of wide South African experience, has just arrived from Johannesburg, where he was allowed to stay in the oapacity of lieutenant of police, and subseqv^ly as a schoolmaster. . They preyed him to go to the front, and tried all kinds of dodges to get him there, but they were unsuccessful. He says the condition of Johannesburg is most depressing to those who know it ; indeed, it is impossible to realise its wretched state. There scarcely exists a house that has not been robbed, especially amongst those of former leading residents. It is somewhat curious that Olive Schreiner's house is amongst those which have been looted, and Mr Nenner himself picked up - several valuable presentation books from authors to her. It is well that this advocate of the Boers should know how they have treated her property in her absence. These are nice people to run the risk of being mobbed for !
