THE FOOTPATHS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATO HEBALP. Sib,' — Being a visitor to your town I was surprised to see that the footpaths are in such a bad state considering the latest plan of footway construction is so cheap. I have recently passed through Ghristchurch and Auckland when I noticed that the tarring of the streets and paths is working very satisfactorily. For the benefit of the Foxton people I will explain the plan adopted in these large towns; all large stones are removed from the surface, care being taken to have the surface rammed solid, then a good thick coat of cold coal tar is spread evenly over the surface and well dusted with fine sand to temporarily protect the surface from the traffic until the tar hardens, the result in a few days is a beautiful elastic foot way. The cost is about 4d per superficial yard. Another, feature in this plan of tarring the surface is that it proves the only cure for the shopkeepers' ." enemy dust." I am, &c, Traveller. P.S.— I see that the Palmerston North Borough Council has, on the i resolution of Cr Edwards, very wisely adopted this plan of treating the streets and footways. Bth March, 1900.
