THE CARNARVON-SANSON TRAMWAY.

Sm, — Foxton has been desoribed as the town of «' wasted opportunities," and possibly to some extent it deserves the title ; twenty years ago it possessed more public spirit and: energy bat divided counsels destroyed its chances, whilst every little settlement on the- main line increases its population and rateable values. Foxton with all the advantage of a good river-port and a central position remains a village still, and but for the transient prosperity of the flax trade it might be described as a "deserted nest of addled eggs." Its wharf is but a landing place for goods in transit to other centres and this must continue until we get through communication 0k by rail ; therefore I wish to draw attention to the opportunity presented by the proposed extension of the Tramway to the Rangitikei river to obtain cheaper road metal, and as that would benefit this district to suggest that the Foxton Borough,

with the assistance of the Bulls Township, should make an effort to extend the line across the river, and possibly later on to Marton and Levin. Good clean metal must be .. obtained when the carriage is so far, JL th« Palmerston gravel has no wear in it, and leaving out the other J advantages it is possible the saving on road metal for this district would , pay interest and sinking fund on our share of the subsidy, leaving us at j the end of the forty-one years with a : clear share in a valuable asset. I would therefore suggest that a small committee be formed at a public meeting to obtain the opinion of the people at Bulls and Sandon and a reliable estimate of cost, and then report to the Foxton Borough Council.
