The Roads about Ladysmith.
♦ Mr E. Harrow writes :— «' From Colenso to Ladysmith by road you cross the river on to the farm Tugela Drift, through which farm the road r -£,*, for two miles. The road here crosses on to Grobbler's Kloof farm, and run 3 through it for five miles ! This firm is named after a stony valley, in which the Boers are in great forca. About, tbe middle of this farm is the dividing ridge ; from one ?ide tbe water runs into the Tugela, from the otbo.r side into the Klip River, botlvabovo and balow Lndysmith. Along thia ridge aro numerous kopjes, which encircle Ladysmith, nnd on which the Boers are strongly entrench- d. and havo hoavy guns. From Grobblor'a Kloof toLidysmith the road passes ihrough the farm P*ifl<iiii, for aboufc five mi'.os. Thk must he tbe road by which Buller advance?, as it is the only one by which heavy guns may be tak^n. Calmso h 8 miies direct from Ladyeraith, 10 by rail. The main road only bas br-f n me-talled. From Co-enso Grobbler's Kloof could easily be Bhelled by heavy guns, sent there by rail, and no doubt it was the firing of these, gnns that was heard at Ladysmith. We have lately heard that General Buller has received traction engines, and.has been trying a long range naval gun at Colenso no doubt bombarding Grobbier's Kloof.
