The Aotea on Fire.
The Aotea, which sailed for LonSon on Sunday morning, returned yesterday morning. A fire broke out in the engine room, but was extinguished before reaching the heads.
The damage to the Aotaa is confined to the engine room. A good deal of injury was done to the machinery and will take some days to repair. Surveyors are now on board examining the vessel. The fire on the Aotea started on the top starboard boiler. The principal damage is to Howden's patent draught apparatus, which was melted. Some woodwork was also burned. The machinery is no A hurt an?, the fire is well away from the cargo. The repairs will probably cost some hundreds and will take three or four days to do. , About noon on Sunday a thin line of smoke was observed on the Aotea coming up near the funnel* Thfe fire was suppressed before any mischief was done, but at 1 p.m. heavy columns of smoke suddenly shot up and the fire was found to have broken out again in exactly the same place. This time it took over an hour's hard and dangerous work to get it under. Tho forced draught engine was considerably damaged, the metal melted out of the bearing shaft and the plates buckled.— Press Association.
