There is some uncertainty as to whether Major-General Warren really garrisoned Spionkop after the engagement. The Agent- General wired :— MajorGeneral Warren has retired soutfak, of the Tugela without loss, Spion Kop being difficult to hold as its perimeter was too large and water-supply deficient. WHY SPIONKOP WAS ABANDONED. General Bulier reports that Spionkop was too large a position for the British garrison to hold. The water supply was also deficient. When General Woodgate was wounded his successor decided to abandon the position.
