■ ♦ ..,! ! It was unfortunate that so Tew attended, and it was remarked that though the meeting had been convened by resolution of the Council only one member turned up to support the Mayor. The few who i were there did well and seemed j almost unanimous in the subscrip- Vj tions being devoted to the relief of V the families of the British troops,/;! During the evening the Mayor nignc-l ) tioned that the printing and adver-vf j : tising had been done free by the pro- |;!j prietor of the Manawatu Herai,©; ;iii| and that the hall was given free by !j ! Mr Theo. Mitchell. )u The Mayor said that he did not intend to make a speech. He said ji they all knew what the meeting was called for. Perhaps he was late in calling the meeting, but our money would be. as good now. He would j have liked to have seen more present, V.j especially as a short time ago he had ; interviewed between 80 and 40 resi- ; dents, when it was arranged that a further contingent should be sent. He read what had been done as to raising a fund elsewhere. i Mr Thynne moved the following resolution: "That a committee be set up to deal with the money sub- : scribed, and to be subscribed, towards the Mayor's Patriotic Fund for the relief of the distress caused by the present South African war : 1 1 first, for the benefit of the roen^JMBS j: of our New Zealand contingent, Um> ! may either be wounded or injuriously !
