Terrible Trap Accident at Palmerston.

♦- A terrible trap accident occurred at Fitzherbert on Tuesday night shortly after 8 o'clock, resulting in the death of one youqg fellow and serious injury to several young ladies. A surprise party of young folk were going out to Mr Anderson's in a brake, and when going down the Kabuterawa Hill opposite Mr Grove's, one of the horses put bis head down and pushed the other with the trap over the bank, and the whole concern rolled some 30ft down. Those in the trap besides the driver were Misses Greer, Synnot, M. Cameron, Christensen, of Fitzherbert (2), M. Withers, M. Anderson, and Messrs Archie Cameron, A. Jack, junr., Masters L. Home and Ernest Greer, while several, including Messrs F. and A. Greer, R. Stead, R. Home and W. Jolly, were riding behind. The lads L. Home and E. Greer, who were sitting with the driver, jumped on to the road clear of the horses. As the trap was going over A. Jack caught Miss Laura Christensen by the hair and arm, and jumped with her clear of the brake, but the others went down with it. Naturally the horses struggled to get free and considerably endangered those who were near. Those who were riding behind went to the assistance of the party in distress and brought them up to the road. After the horses had been set free, it was found that Archie Cameron, who was sitting between Miss Jack and Miss Anderson, was killed. The others were more or less bruised, but with the exception of Miss Christensen, no bones were broken. Miss Jack had a silver match box in her pocket, and this was almost doubled together by a kick from one of tne horses. Miss Amelia Christensen fell under the trap, which pinned her down bythe hip, and broke her left thigh, just at the joint. She had been suffering rather severely, and was taken to the hospital this afternoon. Miss Cameron's condition is causing some anxiety. She is believed to be suffering from slight concussion of the brain and other internal injuries, and has been delirious to-day. The young fellows who were mounted went for assistance and the whole party were brought to their hpmes. An examination of the spot shows that the front off wheel of the brake ran over the side of the cliff for some little distance before the brake went over. The po\e of the brake was smashed and other damage sustained by the vehicle, although the horses got off well. — Standard.
