Russia.
Successful experiments have lately been made by the Russian Government in transporting troops to the Asiatic garrisons. . A force of soldiers was entrained at Tiflis, in Russian Caucasia, and carried on to Baku, on the Caspian Sea. Thence they were taken over the Caspian to Krasnovadsk, and again by rail •to Kushk, on ttur, Afghan frontier, only about forty miles north-east of Herat. The entire journey was made in a week. The despatch of troops to the Per-sian-Afghan frontier is described in the Russian paper as a "pledge of peace for ensuing the tranquillity of these frontiers." ~W" The St Petersburg oorresponcWt of " The Times " says that Russia is making Kushk an advanced strong- 1. hold, probably with a view to intimidating Great Britain on some future occasion. It is semi-official reported from St Petersburg that is was owing to alarming rumours of the death of the Ameer of Afghanistan, and an agitation having broken out amongst the Hindus, that Russia sent a body of troops to Kushk. . In commenting upon the subject "The Times" says the movement is ' probably but an incident of the indiscretion of the Russian military party. Nevertheless,, with the object of reassuring the public, the paper in question considers that Great Britain ought for various reasons, to mobilise a portion of the; fleet. . . The German newspapers consider ■that Russia is seeking an opportunityto reach the sea.
