Wanawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JAN. 9, 1900. The Onward March.

♦ We regret that the past twelvemonths has seen so little done by the Borough authorities towards the development of the town. The last year has undoubtedly been marked by the least improvement for many years past and we should like to see a little more energy displayed in the present year. Councillors have very much in their power to advance the interests of the town beyond actual work within it, if they would interest themselves in urging neighbouringbodies to improve the roads leading to the town. The Manawatu County Council are to be complimented on their response to the application made for a road to the beach, and they did much with the funds then at their command. The road can be muoh improved and we believe if the Mayor made a suitable representation a further expenditure could Be gained. While asking for improvement to the County road tb,e Mayor must not overlook the fact that the same road within the Borough should be clayed and metalled. We Jhave always supported a good road to the beach and yet hope to see one. It is unnecessary to point out the many roads that need metalling, as those interested are always bringing them well to the front, and it is imperative that this year should see that some outlay is made in new formation. One important matter should likewise engage the attention of the Council, and that is a public swimming bath in the river. The possibility of securing one at a reasonable rate is good, as most likely the piles for the berthing of the river steamers will be driven from the end of the wharf to the first or second groin, when a few extra piles and strong wire netting would secure an admirable bathing place, to which some land fencing and a shed would only need adding. A few pounds expenditure in concrete would make a firm bottom, and,, a much needed want would be filled to the benefit of the townspeople and the credit of the Mayor. The well-being of the town is of value to all and we must strive, by all working heartily together, to make our town as attractive as we possibly can, not so much by extravagant, but by judicious, expenditure.
