Pietermarltzburg.
. ■♦ . Pieterraaritzburg has a large fort, with artillery in a commanding position, which would entirely free it from any apprehensions .of a Boer raid. Fort Pearson, which stands on the nearest hill, and not far from the railway station, could knock anything to pieces, and there is nothing within three miles that could touch it. In fact, barring a great defeat of the British, ' Maritzburg is as safe as Sydney. Maritzburg, however, is not probably thinking of , the Boers. It always has a Kaffir rising on the brain. The natives are " getting cheeky " — there's something up. After one has beard this every three months for several years one gets to disbelieve, it. but just now, considering that the Kaffirs are eight or ten to one in Natal, as against white men with the Boers at Colenso, it must be admitted that the situation of the Maritzburg people may not be very happy.
