Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, DEC. 2, 1899. The Licensing Poll.
On Wednesday, besides there being an election of a member for Parliament there will be a poll for the licensing question. It is unnecessary for us to go into a discussion as to any of the three questionswhich will be put to the electors on that day, as the advocates for both sides of the issue have done their best to place their views before the public. The prohibitionists, muchly to their credit have eliminated the prohibition questions from the issue of the general election, and thus the licensing poll becomes, what it should be, the battle field of the opposing forces. Looking at the liquor question, as the majority of the population do, in an unbiassed manner, it is to be hoped electors will understand that the questions they are asked to decide are important ones, and ones Upon which a decisive answer is desired, and therefore everyone who votes for one of the candidates for parliament should also vote at the licensing poll. It is best for the government, for the parties interested, for the population generally that the desire of the people should be made known, and it is at this poll on Wednesday that the answer can quietly and effectively be given. All desire that a general vote should be given, and if so given, the agitation will be layed for another three years. For these reasons we trust every elector will discharge the duty placed upon him and vote upon whatever side of the liquor question he pleases, but vote on the question.
