A Tight Place on the Tugela.
The Tugela is the biggest river in Natal, being over ioo yards wide, and probably nearly twice that just now. There is a fine iron suspension bridge (which the Boers reported recently having blown up), over which the main road passes, and, of course, a railway bridge. The banks of the river are rocky and precipitous, and altogether it is a fine thing to have between one and a superior enemy; but if the bridges are gone the attempt to cross it, if in flood, would be
extremely perilous, and I don't see what else could be done than make the attempt if Ladysmith be abandoned.
