Small Lots Rates on Railways.

The Government have made another attempt to bring the producer and the consumer together by reducing the rates for the carriage of small lots of produce and general goods on the railways. By the courtesy of the Traffic Manager we have had forwarded to us examples of these rates, and we give a specimen or two. A person can send confectionery, live animals in crates or cases, hardware, honey in bottles, game, &c, from Foxion to Wanganui for is 6d if not more than 281bs, or 4s if ii2lbs ; bacon and hams, loose, cheese, eggs, live poultry, dead poultry, seeds and saddlery can be sent even cheaper, as the rates for 281bs is is 6d, but for ii2lbs is 3s 2d. The same class of freight if packed, as well as plants and trees will cost only 2s 1 id. Class D, allows fresh fish, fruit fresh packed, oysters, clover and mangold seeds to go for 2s 8d the hundredweight ; and class E permits grain, flour potatoes, N.Z. grown fruit, fresh, and vegetables to be sent for gd per 281bs, and is 6d for ii2lbs. The maximum charges for fruit and vegetables (fresh N.Z. grown and packed) and game, dead hares and rabbits and fresh fish will be as follows for any distance : — Fruit and vegetables, not exceeding 56lbs, sixnsnee, not exceeding ii2lbs, one shiiv ng, and s ; x;ienc3 far every additional 561bs. Game, &c, not exceeding 7lbs, sixpence, not exceeding i4lbs, one shilling, and not exceeding 28IDS, is 6d.
