Major-General Sir Cornelius F. Clery, commanding the second division of the British Army Corps, has been appointed to command the column marching to the relief of Ladysmith. Joubert, with strong reinforcements, is marching southwards to intercept Clery. General Gatacre has been sent to East London with instructions to record the names of residents showing disloyalty to Great Britain. A force of 1700 Boers is looting south of Estcourt and 600 are foraging towards Greytown, south-east of Estcourt.
General White reports that the Ladysmith garrison have a plentilul supply of ammunition. The Boers' trenches before the town
ha-e been turned into a quagmire by heavy rains.
A sharp fight occurred at Kulumons, in Northern Cape Colony. The Boers suffered badly.
Liei^.-Colonel Byron and Sellhem, Queensland special officers, are attached to the staff of Lord Methuen.
The enemy have occupied Campbelltown and proclaimed the annexation of Grigualand with the exception of Kimberley and Mafeking.
The Free Staters at Aliwal North, who were despatched southwards with three gnns, lost their wagons which were entrusted to camp natives. The latter bolted from the camp, taking many horses and rifles, and proceeded in the direction of the British camp at Queenstown.
The British troops traversing the Cape afford a great object lesson to Afrikanders.
General Buller's orders for making a record of disloyalists with a view to subsequent proceedings, has greatly impressed the disaffected.
