The St. James's Gazette states that France is preparing a strong military expedition to seize Morocco. This would appear to be one of those advantages expected to be taken by other Powers whilst Britain was involved in war with the Transvaal, and one which the English government declared that they were mobilising their reserve fleet to prevent. Morocco occupies a very important position with regard to the Mediterranean Sea, being situated at the extreme north-west point ol Africa facing Spain, and thus opposite to the British stronghold of Gibraltar. The empire is an absolute monarchy, and has a fringe of semi-independent tribes on its borders. The southern capital of- the empire is called Morocco or Marakesch, and is a remnant of the great power the Moors held in the 13th century. Owing to its excellent situation and its genial climate, and its command of the trade routes across the mountains it is safe to predict a great future for it when other people rule the land. This is a matter of much importance, but the main consideration will be the partial command ofthe Mediterranean. Just opposite Gibraltar Spain holds a fortified port in this country, and some years ago one of the European Powers desired to purchase it, and. if we remember rightly England objected to Spain parting with it to any ore unless to herself.
