THE LATEST. A REVERSE FOR THE BRITISH.
It has been officially announced by the War Office that the second battalion of the Royal Irish Fusilier? the second battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment and the Mountain Battery, after lo3ing heavily, capitulated to the enemy during the fighting in the vioinity of Ladysmith. The strength of a battalion is about 800 men under the command of a Lieut.-Colonel.
Sir George White reports that tbe capitulated regiment are unblam able. Their position selected by himself proved untenable. Forty* two officers and 1500 men (including the first), not the second battalions of the Irish Fueiliers, oapitulated. Great anxiety is felt at Durban while awaiting full details of the battle.
It is feared the result will influence the loyalty of the natives and the Dutch waverers in South Africa.
The Boers' front extends 16 miles and in an attempt to outflank the British under Colonel Grimwood showed extreme itubborness.
