Floods.

A flood came down the Manawata very quickly on Tuesday night. When the coach crossed to Shannon in the afternoon there was no sign of any fllood, and on returning in- the evening the water was running across the Moutoa Road. Some of the men 'were working all night on the Motoa estate in mustering sheep, and were at it till noon yesterday, and they had a rough job being up to their knees in water even when they did not get deeper by stepping into a hole. Water came over by the road near Mr Edwards', by ground near the schoolhouge, owing to a portion of the embankment having given way. and as usual, at the ferry. No stock' has been lost. A large number of the flax-cutters in the swamp had to leave on account of the water, and came into town.

On Monday heavy rain fell in Napier for twenty-four hours incessantly, and grave fears are entertained of disastrous floods. The rivers near Napier do not appear very high, but from upcountry alarming reports have been received. At Maraekakaho the river is higher than in the great Easter flood of 1897. It is still raining, though not now so heavily.

On Tuesday the rain ceased, but the gale is still raging. The lower parts of Clive are flooded to a depth of nearly four feet, but the settlers are fully prepared, and no serious damage is reported. The greater part of Papakura is also under water. Heavy losses of sheep in the. country dietricis are reported owing to the severe weather.
