« , Vryburg.— Capital of British Bechuanaland, near a headstream of the Vaal River, 145 miles north of Kimberley by rail. Population 5666. Mafeking. — A station in the northeast corner of British Bechuanaland, near the Transvaal frontier, and on the line of railway from Capetown by Kimberley and Vryburg. Ladysmith. — There are two towns of this name, one in Cape Colony situated at the southern base of the great Zwarte Bergen 70 miles inland from Aliwal South— and a smaller town in Natal 140 miles north-west by rail from Durban. Population 2000. Kimberley. — Is the capital of Griqualaod West, situated 540 miles north-east of Capetown by rail. It did not become a portion of Cape Colony till 1880. Waterworks costing are fed by the Vaal river. There are a handsome town hall, postoffice, high court, public library and botanic gardens and the diamond ) mines. Dispositon of the British forces : Kimberley 4000 men ; a larger number north of Vryburg, At Ladysmith 9000 men, and at Glencoe 4000 men.
