Palmerston North.

4 (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) DEATH OF MR A. McHARDY. Quite a gloom hangs over Palmerston to-day on account of the sudden death of Mr A. McHardy, the President of the A. & P. Association, and one of the candidates for the representation of the district at the coming election. Last night he danced a long Scotch Reel at the St. Patrick's social and darice, and the audience insisted on an encore to which he acceeded. He then Jeft the theatre and went to the Royal Hotel, where he lived, to change his clothes and returned afterwards to the theatre and whilst talking to some one fell into a dead faint, and he was carried to the hotel but he expired (about 10.15 p.m.,) presumably from heart disease, before arriving there. All the hotels have their flags at half-mast, and his loss will be severely felt, both personally and from the action he took as a supporter of the A. and P Association.
