The Ohau Case.
The Ohau poisoning sensation case was opened at Levin yesterday morning. Mr H. Gully appeared for the prosecution and Mr W. L. Fitzherbert for the defence. Inspector Pender was also present. Mrs West was able to give evidence and in the cross-examination it was attempted to prove that the witness had poisoned herself, it being suggested that she had told many women that she had taken poison when she lost a child five years ago. The government analyist's evidence proved the finding of fifty grains of arsenic in the vomit. Dr Mackenzie stated that Mrs West had symptoms which pointed to acute gastric irritation. Alfred West, the husband, said his wife did say when they lost their girl five years ago that as " the girl was gone she might as well go to. The case was adjourned till to-day.
