The Sailing Race between England and America.
4 As the contest for the America Cup will soon be held, the English yacht Shamrock having left for America some account of the two boats will prove interesting,. The Shamrock has been built regardless of expense by Sir Thomas Lipton, the building and sailing of her being reckoned at £ioo,ooo; She is beautifully modelled and can carry i4.t?5 square feet of canvas, and she has two of the best racing skippers id command. The Columbia is described as the largest and costliest, vessel ever designed for sport. The mainmast is no less than 113 feet and the topmast 62 feet, both together their length is 175 feet rather less than the height of the London Monument. She- dan carry 20,000 square feet of canvas. She is 145 tons and there are 90 tons of lead used in her keel. She will carry 48 men, and the weight they will have to pull to raise the mainsail will be equal | to 20oolbs. The Columbia is also said to have cost £100,000. The race will be sailed at the beginning of October.
