Fatal Accident at the Rangitikei Races.

(By our special reporter.)

The races at Rangitikei yesterday were marred by an unfortunate and fatal accident in the Hunter's hurdle race, the last race but one in the day's sport. The race had just started and the horses were taking the first hurdle directly opposite the grand stand, when the horse that preceeded " Stilts " struck the hurdle, and the rebound caught Stilts in his rise for the leap and catching his forelegs caused him to turn a complete somersault* and he fell on the ground with his neck directly under him, and with his rider's (the gentleman rider Mr Nelson McRae) head also hitting the ground first. The whole catastrophe was the work of a second, and the injuries rider and horse received resulted in instantaneous death, according to Dr. Bennett who was on the spot. There was not a move by either rider or horse after touching the ground. Mr Mcßae is known far and wide and was held in much esteem, and he was to have been married in a week's time, this being the last race he was to take part in. His father was watching the race from the start, and saw the unfortunate mishap. Mr Mcßae was a dentist by profession, and had just secured the late Mr Tripe's business in Palmerston.
