QUARTERLY SOCIAL.

The quarterly social of the Methodist Church was held last evening in the schoolroom, when there 7 was a large attendance, Mr E. Osborne occupying the chair. The meeting opened with prayer, atter which the Rev. Mr Woollass, in the unavoidable abscehee, of Mr T. Westwood (Circuit Steward), read the report, which showed the finances of the Church to be as follows -.—Receipts : Foxton collections and social?^ 1 8s nd; Shannon ditto, £5 7s; Motoa ditto, £2 us 3d* total receipts, Ao 73 2d. Expenditure; £57 14s 7d ; debit balance, £18 7 s 7*- . . „ Mr E. Westwood, hi a few wellchosen remarks spdke of the success that had attended their efforts during the last quarter, also of the satisfactory results of the envelope system: The prosperity, of the Church depended upon the Minister, and he urged those present to do all that lay in their power to strengthen his hands, and success would attend their efforts. He impressed the necessity of the young people being sincere, and debend upon it when we begin to think Iliehtlv of the ordinances of Gods house then it is our life is beginning to be a failure. Mr S Howan said he was pleased to see the work of the Church progressing so well. He gave those present some practical ideas rela ive to the Sving of money on luxuries, and to the help which might . be given to the collections from such savings. He also spoke of the encouragement given to Ministers by good , congr egations and he urged those present to do their utmost to help in this direction. . The Rev. Mr Woollass, in a stirring soeech, said that the Church existed Sot for its own benefit but for the good of the community. It should speak in 00 uncertain sound on questions affecting the public at large. He beJeved if the Minister having absolute freedom of speech. He said we are notpTerfect ; we are but men and MiSisters, but we are called to do the bist we can for you ; to help everybody vSo rieeds help, and to go everywhere Jo carry light and healing, ".you have confidence in the Minister stay away, but if you believe the man to be sincere and honest, and if he has Q icaPP from God, hear him, and act STweare living in the best age ?he wor d has ever seen. A vote of thanks was passed to the ladies who had contributed refreshments, the soloists, and also the chairman.
