Maitre Labor i, senior counsel for Captain Dreyfus, was able to appear in Court and resume the direction of the defence. He cross-examined 9everal of the War Office witnesses with crushing effact. Major Junck, one of the official witnesses admitted in answer to a question put by Maitre Damange, junior counsel for the defence, that there was nothing in Dreyfua's conduct that was suggestive of treason. Maitre Labori severely questioned General Mercier as to how he came to be in possession of the Schneider document, seeing that he was no longer Minister of War when it reached the Ministry. General Mercier refused to answer the questions. Maitre Labori declared that the law had been violated, and that he intended to put further questions. A letter was read from a French c^py named Criers showing that Drey- ' tvs was not known at Berlin I The evidence previously given by Bsterhazy, and his letters to th.9 late President Faure, have been read to theCourk. General Gonse testified that Ei terhazy never was th<? right hand mm of the Army Headquarters Staff. It was said by the witness that Dv Paty de Clam's indiscretions had compromised the whole staff He admitted that it was attempted to shield Esterhazy. The " Times " Paris correspon dent says that the generals are so | panic-stricken that they are discus?. i ing the expediency of acknowledging Esterhazy as the author of the bordereau, but declaring that Dreyfus was his accomplice, and the purveyor of secret documents through Weyl, an intermediary. E-iterhazy, who is at present in London, was recognised in Oxford street. A great crowd gacheivd round him, and he was loudly hooted. The police helped him to secure a cab.
