The Frozen Meat Carrying Fleet.
A large addition #9 now jbeing made to the fleet of vestals carrying frozen meat between Australia, New Zea'and and Great Britain. Three are building for Mesera Turnbuli, Martin & Co, and four, to the order of the New Zealand Shipping Com* pany. All these are being fitted with the Linde refrigerating machinery, consisting of a patent compressor, driven by a tandem con* pound steam engine, placed alongside The power is transmitted through a steel crank ehaffc, having the crank set at an angle to give the best turning effect. Ttye ammonia and ■team cylinders and the main bearing are mounted on a strong continuous bed, and this bell is fixed to a wrought steel toox, forming a stiff base, in which are placed tho galvanised ammonia condenser coils. Each coil is in one length, with tho joints outside, and all are tested to a pressure of 20001 b above the atmosphere, The exhaaat steam from the refreigerating and fan engines ii conducted in an auxiliary condenser, having a small independent compound engine mounted on it for driving the air pump, the whole being self contained. The oondenstir also receives the exhaust steam from the electric engine. The water circulating pump is independent. — Post.
