CONDENSED CABLEGRAMS.

France.

THE DEYFUS AFFAIR.

The Parisian newspapers . hare commented on the first day's proceedings at the Dreyfus courtmartial at Hennas.

The Nationalists journals declare that Dreyfus'a details were curt and unconvincing.

Oa the other hand the " Temp 3 " and the " Figaro " assert that the prisoner's whole bearing was forceful and that his calmness carried conviction of his innocence.

Dreyfus anticipated that he would be immediately released.

Tbe examination of the secret dossier and of three hundred other documents by the court- martial is now proceeding, in the presence of tbe prisoner and his count el.

Extraordinary precautions are taken to protect Dreyfus when he is on his way between the prison and the Courthouse at Rennes, as attempts at assassination are feared. Whilst the prisoner is passing spectators are expelled from the vicinity, and householders are compelled to keep within doors.

Major Marchand, hero of the French expedition to Fashoda, has been apf)ointed Governor of French Somaliand and Envoy Extraordinary to the King of Abyssinia.
