The Dominican Republic.
News has come to hand that General Ulysses Heareaux, the President of the Dominican Republic has been assassinated at Moca, a town in the northern part of the island of Hayti. This island is the largest, afte r Cuba, of the West Indian islands, and is now divided into the independent States of Hayti, and the Dominican Republic. Hayti was discovered by Columbus and the natives were soon swept away and their places filled by negro slaves, who were introduced as early as 1505. With the mixture of negroes, buccaneers, and French, their descendants grew into a separate class and in 1791 the Europeans were driven out of the country. The control has never been very permanent, the country changing from republic to monarchy at frequent intervals, until the eastern portion of the island formed itself into the Dominican Republic in 1843. The population of this republic numbers 417,000, mostly negroes or mulattoes. The president is chosen for four years, and the legislative power is a congress of twenty-four deputies. The capital is San Domingo, which contains the residence of Columbus. The General was elected president in 1886, and has been twice re-elected, and the news is silent as to the motive for his assassination.
