Wellington Election.
The polling on Tuesday was heavy, 11,716 persons having recorded their votes, 6943 for Mr Hutcheson and 4771 for Mr Jellicoe, Mr Hutcheson thus being elected by a majority of 2174 votes. In every polling booth but two Mr Hutcheson had a majority, and the two that were in Mr Jellicoe's favor gave him an advantage of one in one booth and 43 in the other.
In returning thanks Mr Jellicoe doubted whether any candidate for parliamentary honours had ever encountered such combined opposition as he had had to encounter on this occasion.
Mr Hutcheson declared his return was an affirmation of the principle he had been fighting for, namely, freedom of the people's representatives as against party slavery.
