Small Farm Industries.
In his address at the opening of the Wellington Poultry Show, the Mayor (Mr J. R. Blair), who is president of the Society, said that occupants of the land should take up the smaller indus*
tries, such as poultry and duck rearing, a 9 well as sheep-breeding. If the 3mall farmer did not take up this policy disaster would come to him. Mr Blair (reports the lt Post ") quoted the Scotch farmer, who had found poultry and ducks profitable items \ 1 his occupation. The co!o y of Vi :- toria h?d recently recognised the importance of poultry raisii g, and the Government was rendering great assistance to farmers in the matter. New South Wales was making a specialty of duck-rearing, and no less than 60,000 pairs were exported last year. In Canada and the United States poultry raising had grown into an enormous industry, and he had been informed that one American duck-breeder alone was earning from £8000 to £10,000 per annum. This should be an encouragement to our farmers to go and do likewise.
