Some little trouble is likely to be experienced by a settler from having sold sheep sent away by rail, that were lousy. A kind of paper is made from seaweed which is so transparent that it may be used instead of glass for windows. The Jockey Club has suspended Tod Sloan, the successful American rider, for disobedience at the post at the Sandown Park meeting. A consignment of frozen Russian bear flesh was recently landed in London, and was readily sold in the Leadenhall market at as a pound. A wages dispute brought into Court instanced the belief of both plaintiff and defendant that it was the duty of the Court to worry out the intricacies of amateur book-keeping. It seemed to them a surprise for the case to be adjourned to enable them to work out the particulars for themselves. Consistency is perhaps not to be expected in lawyers, and certainly was not shown on Thursday. A case was brought on by a Native on the strength of an agreement written in English and the defending counsel objected. Plaintiffs counsel, however, managed to get the objection waived, but when defendant put in another agreement upsetting the one relied on, plaintiff s counsel desired to hark back to the objection that it was in English. The Magistrate ruled that what was sauce for the goose was likewise sauce for the gander.

The exposures made by war correspondents of General Otis's tactics in the Philippines have occasioned a violent patriotic outburst in the United States, by which President McKinley's popularity has been affected. To quench the flame of burning j petroleum, an Italian scientist advises people to throw milk on it. Milk forms an emulsion with the oil and attenuates its cohesion, thus rendering the flame more easy of extinction. Three places at least are known where green snow is found. One of these is near Mount Hecla, Iceland ; another 14 miles east of the mouth of the Obi ; and the third near Quito, South America. Sir Thomas Lipton's America Cup challenger Shamrock has outsailed the yacht Brittannia by thirteen minutes over a forty-mile course. The Prince of Wales was aboard the Britannia during the match. ♦• Your voice," said the commanding officer, "is decidedly rasping." In connection with the anti-Ritualist movement, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, in the Consistorial Court, are bearing argument as to the legality of the practice of reserving the sacrament. Mr Hull, the Inspector of Stock in this district, notifies that prison is laid on all reserves near Foxton. He also intimates that settlers must take active steps to destroy rabbits, otherwise proceedings will be taken without further notice. A stranger attending the S.M. Court on Thursday would have thought he was in the precinfcts of the Supreme Court judging by the number of police present, who were represented by Sergeant-Major Ramsay and Constables Foster. Minogue and Gray. Beef tea is the most recent cure for baldnasa, and for' diseases affecting the hair. Dr Deichler says that the hair contains glue and gelatine, so he treats patients by means of bullion made of beef and gelatine, or shavings of deers' horns. At the Wellington races Mr Thomas Scott had one win with Whangaron in the Maiden Steeplechase, and a second with Hangfire in the Winter Hurdle Handicap. Mr "H. Hannah's " Wooloomooloo was second in the Hack and Hunter Steeplechase. Commissioner Tunbridge is in favour of the Imperial Licensing Act of 1872 being brought into force in the colony, making it an offence to be on licensed prenrrses without being able to show good cause, after hours. He recommends this on account of the difficulty experienced in getting convictions. Three M.P.'s— -Capt. Cecil Norton, Capt. Sinclair, and Capt. Pirie — have each served in the same regiment, the sth Royal Irish I^ancers, from which they have retired with the rank of captain, and now sit together on the same side — they are ardent Radicals and close political and personal friends —at Westminster. Paris boasts of a paper intended for beggars only. Here are a couple of its advertisements : — " A vacancy has occurred tor a blind man who can play the violin. Collections good. Small premium required." " Wanted at once, for seaside resort, a pair of helpless cripples. Good business. References given and required ; also a moderata premium." The most magnificent tomb in the the world is the Taj Mahal, in Agra, Hindustan. It was erected by Shah Jehan to the memory of his favourite Queen. It is octagonal in form, of pure white marble, inlaid with jasper, cornelian, turquoise, agate, amethysts, and sapphires. The work took 32,000 men 20 years to complete, and though there were free gifts and the labour was free the cost was £3,500,000. A cable message was received in Wellington from England two days ago, to the*effect that several of the most eminent doctors in London had examined the Hon. John M'Kenzie, ' Minister for Lands, and had recommended that he should undergo an operation. A message was received later to the effect that the operation had been performed with success, news of which will be welcomed by the hon. gentleman's friends. A lady writing to the Chronicle on dancing at Home says:— One very pretty novelty was introduced at a military ball. In the lancers every lady carried an imitation lance stick, about 4ft 6in long, the pennant, red and white, about i6in long, the top of the stick* being simply covered with silver paper to serve for a spear; a little pocket in the dress for the buttend, and the lance fastened to the arm by a ribbon, allowing the lance to slope slightly backwards. No sixteens were allowed (eights only), and the effect was one of the prettiest sights I ever saw in a ball room.
Mr Bridge, dentist, notifies his next visit to Foxton for the 29th inst. There will be service at St. Mary's (R.C.) Church to-morrow at 11 a.m. Mr Alf Fraser notifies that he has removed into his new and very much more commodious premises. The House of Commons, by a large majority, has rejected a Bill by which it was sought to prohibit the manufacture or importation for sale of margarine coloured so as to resemble butter. Mr William Collins had the misfortune last week to loose his cart horse by death, and he has lost no time in replacing it, as he attended the Feildingsale of horses and secured a spendid upstanding animal which should prove a valuable aid to him for many years to come. The proprietor of the Palmerston Steam Cooperage Factory has a list of some of his manufactures in our advertising columns, from which will be seen that butter boxes, scalding tubs, and brewer's kegs can be obtained from him, as well as the usual leading lines in such work. Fruit cases are another specialty. The Rev. G. S. Harper/of Rongotea, commences a fortnight's special services in the Methodist Church tomorrow. The Rev. R f Hall comes up from Wellington to carry en the services on Tuesday next. The meetings will be held in the church commencing at 7.30 every evening, and Sankey's hymn books will be used. Mr Grove, who is the cash grocer of Palmerston, advertises that he will send his cash price list of groceries j which he feels sure will prove that he can defy competition. All goods purchased from him are delivered free at the nearest railway station to the purchaser's residence. He is prepared to make special concessions to flaxmillers. Ashburton should put in a claim for the champion absent-minded man. The other evening a resident on going to clear his post office box noticed the door of a neighbouring one open, and dangling from the lock was a bunch of keys, a watch, and a sovereign case, in which were four sovereigns. The property was at once handed in to the postmaster, and the absent-minded private box holder was communicated with. A further mob of 15 head of diseased cattle were cremated at the Longburn Freezing Works a few days ago says the Manawatu Times, and another mob of 10 head is now being collected from various parts of the district. During the past six months fully 200. applications have been made by ssttlers resident in all parts of the district for the inspector to look at suspected beasts. Fortunately oaly about fifty per cent of the animals have had to be condemned as suffering from tuberculosis, the rest being affected with non-contagious ailments.
