Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY. JULY 18. 1899 The Carnarvon-Sanson Tramway.
« The Manawatu County Council at its last meeting authorised the employment of an engineer to ascertain the cost of taking the Tramline from its present terminous at Sanson to the metal pit near the Rangitikei river. This is a work which should almost pay for itself, as the new road to the new bridge has to be formed through this gravel, and some one, the contractor for the bridge in the first instance, will have to remove it. If the tram line is taken to the gravel the contractor would be bound to appreciate the. easy mode of removal and should be willing to pay a fair sum to the Council for taking it away, and if arrangements were made for depositing quantities at sites along the line nearest to the roads soon to be J metalled, and also gave good terms, to the Borough Council such as to induce them to take a quantity, a very profitable business would be done. We trust the County representatives will do all they can to further the extension. It was stated also at the meeting that the Bulls bridge would not be strong enough to carry an engine, if this is so, someone has Thundered, because Mr John Stevens assured us that the bridge was designed with such an object. Of course this- is most necessary and an agitation should be made to secure any alteration in the structure that may be necessary to strengthen it for this purpose. The bridge is being built for the convenience of the public, and its conversion into a tram bridge is a very important point to them. We can assure the Manawatu County Council of every assistance from this portion of the district towards securing their aim, if intimation is given as to the manner that aid can be given.
